A new report suggests that the National Museum is in need of an overhaul.
The report, published by the Comptroller and Auditor General John Purcell, has found there is a need to improve the safeguarding of the collections, devise policies covering acquisitions and disposals, provide better access to the collections and modernise the management of the museum.
The report found that many artefacts are stored in poor conditions. It recommended that more modern recording methods be used to keep track of the museum's holdings.
It said that the museum should consider longer opening hours so that it is more accessible to the public, and that modernising the museum's website would improve access.
The report comes ahead of a planned injection of funding for the museum. In order to ensure that the €30m additional investment planned is used optimally, the museum must implement a comprehensive strategy, the report said.
