Court clears way for family deportation

Four Courts - Woman refused appeal to Supreme Court
Four Courts - Woman refused appeal to Supreme Court

The High Court has cleared the way for the deportation of a Nigerian woman, arrested in Sligo two years ago.

Pamela Izebhekhai had challenged the decision of the Minister for Justice to deport herself and her two young daughters, seven-year-old Naomi and five-year-old Jemima.

She was arrested after spending five weeks in hiding in December 2005.

Ms Izebhekhai said she had already lost a baby daughter as a result of female genital mutilation in Nigeria and feared for the lives of her other daughters if they were deported.

The High Court dismissed her challenge in January.

Mr Justice Kevin Feeney has today refused to allow Ms Izebhekhai to appeal to the Supreme Court.

This decision means her deportation could go ahead at any time.

However, Ms Izebhekhai has lodged an application with the Minister for Justice for subsidiary protection.
