The Minister for Justice has told the Dáil that the number of homicides by stabbing doubled last year.

Brian Lenihan said 36 people died after stabbing incidents in 2007, 18 more than in the previous year.

He told Fine Gael Justice Spokesperson Charlie Flanagan that the number of gang related murders involving firearms was down over the same period.
