Two men have been killed in a road crash on the N7 Naas Road in Citywest.

The collision happened at around 6am this morning when a Fiat Punto travelling the wrong way down the southbound side of the N7 struck a Honda coming the other direction.

The 19-year-old man from Palmerstown and his 20-year-old companion from Clondalkin, who were in the Fiat, were pronounced dead at Tallaght hospital.

A 27-year-old off-duty garda, who was the sole occupant of the Honda, and who was on his way home to Naas after completing a shift, was also injured and was brought to the same hospital. He remains seriously ill there tonight.

His involvement in the crash prompted the routine calling in of the Garda Ombudsman Commission.

Its officers controlled the investigation for several hours.

But later, as the wreckage was removed to Clondalkin garda station, commission investigators reviewed the evidence and decided to hand control back to gardaí.

During that period part of the busy road remained closed, causing traffic chaos.

The section of the N7 southbound between the Saggart and Grangecastle exits has reopened.
