A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting at a garda who was on duty outside a house in Crumlin in Dublin two years ago.
Jonathan Radford pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life in September 2006.
Sergeant Mark Clarke was shot in the chest while he patrolled a house that had been shot at the previous night.
Radford had also pointed the gun at pursuing gardaí and fired another shot.
Lawyers for Radford said he had not intended to kill Mr Clarke, however Judge Frank O'Donnell said he found this difficult to reconcile with the reality of firing a gun directly at him.
The court heard that Radford had written a letter of apology, however Judge O'Donnell said the gardaí were an unarmed force in the front line and the court must take the most serious view of the offence.
The judge suspended the last two years of the sentence.
A 17-year-old youth was sentenced to seven years for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The last three years of the sentence were suspended.
