A badly decomposed body has been found at Ryaninch near the village of Ballina in Co Clare.
The discovery was made shortly after 4pm today by a man walking his dog on lands overlooking Lough Derg at Ryaninch, about 3km from Ballina on the road to Portroe.
The area where the body was discovered is on the Co Tipperary side of the lake.
The scene has been sealed off pending an examination by a team of technical investigators and the State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.
They are due to arrive at the scene tomorrow morning.
Investigating gardaí say because of the condition of the body it is too early to speculate on an identity. They have not yet determined if the body is that of a man or a woman.
Gardaí are checking lists of missing persons in the area going back over several months.
An investigation into the disappearance of a man from the Limerick area last October remains open, and initial inquiries will focus on whether the remains are those of that man.
