The naval vessel LE Eithne evacuated an injured crewman from a French trawler some 50 nautical miles (92km) off the Galway coast last night.

The crewman of the Simone Keghian II received emergency treatment for a laceration to the eye on board the Eithne.

He was then airlifted by Coast Guard helicopter to University College Hospital in Galway.

The navy became involved in the operation after the Coast Guard experienced difficulty airlifting the man due to obstructions on the deck of the trawler.
