A survey by the lobby group Irish Business Against Litter has found that fast-food packaging is the most common form of litter in Ireland.

In the latest IBAL study, Sligo town was named Ireland's number one litter black spot, followed by Nenagh, Tallaght and Mallow.

IBAL says litter levels have improved greatly in Irish towns over the last five years, but in a survey of 50 towns and cities, eight were deemed to be either seriously littered or a litter blackspot.

Dundalk has been named as the cleanest town in Ireland. Cavan and Fermoy had also been in the running for the title.

But IBAL is warning that the level of fast-food related litter is rising by almost a third each year.

The group says take-away food and wrappers were present in almost half of the sites surveyed.

It is also questioning whether there are enough full-time litter wardens to enforce litter legislation.
