Five prisoners given temporary release over the Christmas period have failed to return to jail on time.

The five were among a total of 137 prisoners granted periods of release this Christmas.

The prisoners were all due to return to prison by 27 December.

However, a Prison Service spokesman this evening said the five in question did not return as planned, and have not yet made themselves known to prison authorities.

They were all coming towards the end of their sentences, with one due for release in February, two in March, and two due to be released from prison by April 2008.

Two of the missing prisoners were from Shelton Abbey in Co Wicklow, one was from Loughan House, Co Cavan, one was given temporary release from Limerick and the other from Mountjoy Jail.
