A Canadian visitor was hit over the head with a baseball bat during a robbery early this morning in the Andersonstown area of west Belfast.

The 25-year-old man was treated at the city's Royal Victoria Hospital after he and his 27-year-old sister were targeted by a gang around 2am.

The PSNI say the pair had been walking along Bearnagh Drive after visiting relatives when they were assaulted and robbed.

The tourist's sister was pushed against a wall as the gang stole jewellery, cash and a mobile phone.

The victim's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Police later arrested four teenagers, one aged 15, two aged 16 and another 1,  for questioning.

They also recovered screwdrivers, a baseball bat and knives.

Witnesses to the assault were asked to contact the police.

Sinn Féin West Belfast Assembly member Paul Maskey said those behind the attack should be ashamed of their actions because the area gives a huge welcome to the many thousands of visitors to every year.

SDLP Councillor Tim Attwood said local people were shocked at what he said was an outrageous attack.
