House examined after foiled cash raid

Investigations are continuing in counties Carlow, Wexford and Dublin after an armed gang targeted an employee of a cash-in-transit company .

The gang broke into the family's home in Tullow, Co Carlow, on Wednesday night and removed the woman and the two children to a location in Co Wexford.

It is believed that at around 9am, the man, whose wife and two young children had been taken hostage, presented himself to work colleagues who were making a cash delivery to a premises in the Lower Grafton Street area of Dublin city.

The man told his colleagues that his family were being held against their will, and he left the scene with a quantity of cash.

He then travelled to a location in west Dublin, where the criminal gang had told him to bring the money.

When gardaí learned that his wife and two children had freed themselves in Co Wexford, they moved in and secured the money.
No arrests have been made.

A technical examination was carried out today at the family's home in Tullow.

It is understood the gang of three or four men who broke into the house were armed and masked.

Gardaí had set up a response management team in the early hours of this morning when they became aware that something untoward had occurred in Tullow.

A search for the gang is continuing.
