The father and son who died after their fishing boat apparently capsized in Inver Bay, Co Donegal, have been named locally as 46-year-old Liam Kennedy and his son Conor from Inver.

Conor is believed to have been 17 or 18. They are survived by Liam's wife and another son.

The family is well known in the fishing community in Co Donegal.

The two fishermen are believed to have been checking their lobster pots in Inver Bay when their 20-foot open decked boat capsized.

The alarm was raised by another lobster fisherman from the area who had returned to shore because the weather was worsening.

He was concerned that the two had not returned and went back out to Doorin Point where he saw a flare going off and rang 999.

Malin Head Coast Guard sent the Coast Guard helicopter in Sligo to the scene as well as lifeboats from Arranmore Island, Killybegs and Bundoran.

However the weather was too bad for the Bundoran boat to launch. The helicopter crew spotted the two men in the sea about a mile off shore and winched them aboard.

Resuscitation teams were waiting at Sligo General Hospital when the helicopter landed. However despite efforts to save them, the two men died this evening.
