A baby boy has died in hospital following a road crash in Co Meath yesterday evening.
The seven-month-old boy was fatally injured in the collision between a car and a van at around 6pm yesterday evening near Cushinstown on the N2 between Ashbourne and Slane.
The car and the van involved have been taken to Ashbourne Garda station for further forensic examination.
The baby was travelling in the back of the car with his mother and her sister, while the baby's grandmother was in the front beside her partner who was driving the car.
The baby's mother had gotten out of the car at the side of the road with her sister when the car was struck from behind causing serious injuries to the baby who was in the back seat.
He died early this morning.
The group had been returning to their home in Knockbridge near Dundalk when the collision happened.
The man who was driving the van was on his way to Slane.
Gardaí are appealing for information from anyone who may have been travelling on the N2 and who witnessed the collision.
Separately, two people have been taken to hospital following a road accident outside Claremorris in Co Mayo.
A van and a crane were involved in the accident shortly before 7am this morning.
The driver of the van is described as being seriously injured.
The driver of the crane also sustained injuries.
A section of the Claremorris-Castlebar road is closed and diversions will be in place between Breaffy and Claremorris for several hours.
