Call for rise in asylum seekers allowance

Irish Refugee Council - Call for rise in asylum allowance

The Irish Refugee Council says the living allowance for asylum seekers is the only welfare payment that has never been increased.

The group says the payment made to asylum seekers who are awaiting a decision on their claim is just €19.10 a week.

The payment has not changed in eight years, despite rising inflation and costs of living.

The council wants the payment raised to €60 per week for adults and €35 for children, which it says would immediately raise 6,500 people out of extreme poverty.

In its pre-budget submission, the IRC is calling on the Government to do something immediately to help people that are living in Ireland, but are not allowed to work.
