The man convicted of killing and raping Rachel Kiely has been sentenced to a further eight years in prison for robbery at a Co Cork post office while out on bail.

23-year-old Ian Horgan, with an address at The Hermitage in Macroom, was found guilty by a jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court of robbing €1,500 at knife point from Clondrohid Post Office in west Cork in September 2005.

At the time Horgan was out on bail pending a retrial for the murder of Ms Kiely in 2000.

The beautician was raped and killed while she was out walking her dogs near her Ballincollig in October 2000.

At his retrial, he was found guilty of her manslaughter and rape and was due to be released in September 2010.

With today's additional sentence, the earliest date for his release will now be September 2016.

Handing down the sentence Judge Con Murphy said the robbery was a grave offence and that he had taken advantage of an old defenceless couple.

The new prison sentence will begin in 2010.

Reacting to the sentence, Ms Kiely's brother-in-law David Dunlea said the family does not hold any bitterness or hatred towards Mr Horgan.

Mr Dunlea said Mr Horgan is serving his time and the fact that he is going to serve more is not going to change the affect he has had on them.
