A man and woman have been arrested by police investigating the shooting of an off-duty PSNI officer in Co Tyrone yesterday.

The officer was shot a number of times when his car stopped at traffic lights in the Circular Road area of Dungannon.

He had finished his shift and after leaving Dungannon PSNI station when his car was halted.

He was shot by a lone gunman but managed to drive back towards the police base before collapsing. He is now in a stable condition in hospital with serious shoulder injuries.

DUP MLA Maurice Morrow has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Last Thursday, a 43-year-old officer was shot in Derry after leaving his child at a Catholic city centre school.

At the weekend a device placed in a cannon gun ignited during the Remembrance Day service in Newry.

A hoax warning was given in Enniskillen to coincide with its Remembrance Day ceremony.

All of the incidents add up to an increased threat from dissident republicans.

In recent days a number of leading politicians have been given extra security.
