The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan, was due to announce a new Government scheme aimed at reducing energy use in homes.
The aim of the scheme is to have an electronic meter installed in every home, which will allow people to eliminate unnecessary use of electricity and reduce their bills.
A pilot programme will commence next year involving 25,000 homes across the country. If the scheme goes well it will be extended.
Another dimension to the scheme is that people with solar or wind power will be able to sell their energy back to the grid.
