No reconsidering of children's hospital site

Tallaght - Urgent child care centre proposed
Tallaght - Urgent child care centre proposed

A spokesman for Minister for Health Mary Harney has said that the positive nature of the RKW report on the construction of the new children's hospital at the Mater site means the decision to locate it there will not be reconsidered.

In March the Minister said she would not hesitate to have the decision to locate it at the Mater re-examined if RKW concluded the site was inadequate.

But today, a spokesman said there was now no reason for the plans not to proceed.

A spokesman for the New Crumlin Hospital Group said it would now examine the RKW report in detail over the coming days before commenting further.

The spokesman welcomed the publishing of the report.

Neither Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin, nor the National Children's Hospital in Tallaght have commented on the contents of the report, which they received today.

The final plan for the new national children's hospital says the facility should have up to 454 beds and 20 operating theatres.

The main outline for the new national children's hospital provides for an urgent care centre for children based at Tallaght Hospital.

This day centre would deal with minor injuries, fevers and asthma cases.

Depending on the workload at Tallaght, there may be a need to have two more urgent care centres for children at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown and at St Columcille's Hospital in Loughlinstown at a later stage.

The report says that while planned new public transport services at the national children's hospital will not be advantageous for sick children, they will assist staff and visitors.

The new hospital will have up to 1,800 car parking spaces.
