Gardaí have made contact with two men who were in the taxi in which John Daly was shot in Finglas in the early hours yesterday morning.

The two men, who were friends of the 27-year-old, were in the taxi with Daly, the driver and three young women at the time of the shooting.

It has also emerged that the women only met Daly and his friends for the first time that night in town and agreed to go back with them to a party.

Daly was shot a number of times while sitting in a taxi on Cloonlara Drive in Finglas at around 1.45am yesterday morning.

He had just returned from a night out and gardaí are now examining CCTV footage from the city centre where Daly and his friends were socialising.

A post mortem examination found that Daly was shot a number of times in the body, mainly on his left hand side as he sat in the passenger seat.

Gardaí are also carrying out house to house inquiries.

In the Dáil today, the Taoiseach warned that if crime gangs continue to flout the laws, politicians will have to think long and hard at bringing legislation and actions into what he called 'very hard places'.

Mr Ahern said this was not something that should be undertaken lightly, but he referred to the example of the Special Criminal Court, where opinions of Garda Superintendents could be taken in evidence.

The Taoiseach is to meet the Garda Commissioner, Noel Conroy, next week to discuss recent gangland killings and other criminal activity.
