A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with this morning's fatal hit-and-run in Castlemartyr, Co Cork.
Mary McCarthy from Main Street, Castlemartyr died after she was struck by a car just after 7am this morning.
The 85-year-old had been crossing the road from the church to her home when she was knocked down by a car which failed to stop.
A man from the east Cork area presented himself at Midleton Garda Station this afternoon.
He was arrested for questioning in connection with dangerous driving causing death and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Meanwhile, a mother and her three children were injured in a separate road accident in Co Cork yesterday evening.
The 40-year-old woman and her three children were in a car which was in collision with a truck at Whitewell Cross on the main Whitegate to Midleton road.
The mother, who was driving the car, remains in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital.
Her three children, two boys aged 11 and seven and a four-year-old girl, were also seriously injured. One child is also described as being in a critical condition.
