A garda from the Longford-Westmeath drugs unit has been stabbed and two men arrested after a search in the Athlone area in the early hours of this morning.
The incident happened while detectives were carrying out a search in the west area of the town.
The garda who was injured was brought to Mullingar General Hospital and is to be transferred to St James's Hospital in Dublin for treatment.
Two men arrested at the scene are being detained at Athlone Garda Station.
