The Irish Human Rights Commission has said there is significant danger that the Government is rushing to bring forward legislation to tackle criminal activity instead of seeking more practical solutions.

The IHRC has criticised the excessive speed with which the Criminal Justice Bill 2007 was rushed into law earlier this year.

The Commission said other measures including greater resourcing of police, protection services for witnesses, and communities supports would be better placed to tackle crime.

Speaking at a conference hosted in conjunction with the Law Society, Des Hogan, of the IHRC, said inadequate discussion of the Criminal Justice Bill prior to enactment could result in the erosion of long-established human rights protections.
