Michael Collins - Fined €25,000 for a charge of tax fraud

The former Fianna Fáil TD for Limerick West, Michael Collins, has been given a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to pay a fine of €25,000 by the Circuit Court in Limerick.

A jury found Mr Collins guilty of a charge of tax fraud on Friday 28 September.

Judge Carroll Moran said it was his considered view that it would be unjust to impose an immediate prison sentence as Mr Collins was of previous good character, had no previous convictions and was in a state of poor health.

But he added Mr Collins was not entitled to any discount he may have received had he pleaded guilty.
