The Minister for Health, Mary Harney, has announced the forthcoming implementation of a ban on all in-store advertising of tobacco products.

The measures, which were made law in the Public Health (Tobacco) Acts 2002 and 2004, will also include a ban on point-of-sale advertising and the display of tobacco products in retail premises.

Tighter controls on the location and operation of tobacco vending machines are also planned, and a register of tobacco retailers is being introduced.

Consultation will now take place about a timeframe for the introduction of the measures given the implications for retailers, distributors and manufacturers.
