The first Irish person with cystic fibrosis to undergo a double lung transplant in Ireland has been discharged from the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

18-year-old Paul Minchin from Bagenalstown, Co Carlow said he was looking forward to getting home to the family farm and breathing Carlow air in his new lungs.

The operation was performed by specialists at the Mater Hospital last month. Up to now, these transplants on Irish patients have been performed in England.

Ireland has a high incidence of cystic fibrosis with over 1,000 people living here with the life-threatening, inherited disease.
