The President of SIPTU, Jack O’Connor, has said there is a problem with claims of bogus self-employment involving Romanians and Bulgarians who have arrived in Ireland since their countries became EU members.

SIPTU is calling on the Government to protect workers from exploitation and safeguard against bogus self-employment.

Romanians and Bulgarians need permits to work in Ireland, but some may be able to get work by claiming to be self-employed.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Mr O'Connor said migrant workers were welcome, but that by being exploited they are being used to undermine hard won labour standards.
