The Spanish authorities have said that about 6,000 African migrants died at sea this year while attempting to make the crossing between the west coast of Africa and the Canary Islands.
Official figures show that in 2006, more than 31,000 successfully reached the Canaries, more than six times the number in 2005.
The increase has prompted Spain to ask for assistance from fellow EU member states in helping to patrol the area.
