The Israeli education minister, Yuli Tamir, has said school textbooks should reflect Israel's pre-1967 borders.

The Israeli education minister, Yuli Tamir, has said school textbooks should reflect Israel's pre-1967 borders.

Currently, schoolbooks show the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights as being part of lsrael.

International law deems them occupied land that Israel has illegally settled.

Ms Tamir said changes were needed to give Israeli children a proper understanding of their history and has ordered the books to be changed.

Her position is seen as a direct challenge to the Jewish settlement movement, which has fought hard against any attempt by governments to withdraw from occupied land.
