Two 17-year-old men have been arrested in connection with the arson attack on the home of Cork City Councillor Chris O'Leary.
They are being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to six hours.
The two young men were arrested in the Blackrock area of the city shortly after 6.30pm.
Green Party City Councillor Chris O'Leary, his wife Angela and 12-year-old daughter Orla had a narrow escape when the house was fire bombed this morning.
Mr O'Leary woke up at about 3am to find that his front porch and doorway were ablaze.
He raised the alarm and then escaped. The family was treated for smoke inhalation.
Mr O'Leary said he believes the attack was connected to his campaigning against anti-social behaviour in the locality, and believes the arson attack was attempted murder.
It was the second attack on his house in 18 months.
After the first attack, a man was charged in connection with the last attack and served six months in prison.
