Labour & FG call for investigation

Enda Kenny - Govt is 'federation of factions'
Enda Kenny - Govt is 'federation of factions'

In a joint initiative this afternoon, Labour and Fine Gael have called for an independent investigation into the handling of the case that led to the release of a child rapist earlier this month.

The two parties say that the Government's plan to have the handling of the issue investigated by an official from the Department of Finance doesn't go far enough.

Enda Kenny and Pat Rabbitte want a full independent investigation like the enquiry currently under way into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

They have also written to the Director of Public Prosecutions to ascertain precisely how many suspects could potentially walk free due to Supreme Court decision last month.

Mr Kenny claimed they were taking that step because of what he called serial stonewalling by the Taoiseach on the issue in the Dáil.

Both Mr Kenny and his Labour counterpart told a news conference that the Government was now so beset by internal squabbling that it could no longer function effectively.

The Fine Gael leader said the Coalition was now 'a federation of factions', while Pat Rabbitte claimed it was hard to see how they could last until next May.
