Asylum seekers - Third day of protest

A two-hour meeting between representatives of the Afghan hunger strikers and Department of Justice officials has ended without agreement.

A total of seven of the protestors were taken to hospital today suffering from severe dehydration as a result of a hunger and thirst strike that started in St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin last Sunday.

41 men started the hunger strike over failed asylum applications. They claim their lives would be in danger if they were sent back to Afghanistan.

In a statement this evening, the Department of Justice said the hunger strikers had asked for space to consider their position.

A department spokesperson said its has asked the men to use tonight to consider the Government’s position and the reality of the situation.

Following an agreement to hold the meeting most of the men involved had agreed to drink some water.

Earlier, the Department of Justice confirmed that it had behind the scenes contact with the men but repeated that it would not negotiate on the men’s applications for refugee status.
