New research from one of the country's biggest financial institutions suggests that two thirds of SSIA holders intend to keep saving once they receive their financial windfall.

The research comes from the market research firm, Behaviour and Attitudes, on behalf of Irish Life and Permanent.

It determines that almost €2.3 billion will be poured into home improvements, which is far more than the €550m savers plan to inject into their pensions despite incentives to do so announced by the Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen.

A further €1.2 billion will be spent on property investment at home and abroad while €1 billion will be spent on holidays. The research suggests that €820 million will be spent on cars.

Some €16 billion is locked away in the Government-incentivised SSIA accounts, the first of which are set to mature at the end of this month.

Half of the 1,200 surveyed had no definite plans for their SSIA windfall once it matures, though older people and those whom Irish Life describes as working class are more likely to spend the cash.
