Bob Geldof and Olympic gold medalist, Ronnie Delany, have been granted the freedom of Dublin city at a ceremony this afternoon.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Catherine Byrne, nominated Bob Geldof for his work as a humanitarian over the past 20 years.
She said he had applied himself wholeheartedly as a rock star communicator to relieving poverty in the world's poorest countries.
Ronnie Delany, who won an Olympic gold medal for Ireland in the 1,500 metres in 1956, was nominated for his contribution to Irish athletics and for being an inspiration to other world-class Irish athletes.
The two received the freedom of the city at a ceremony outside the Mansion House on Dawson Street and were presented with scrolls and specially-designed crystal globes.
The first of 72 recipients of the honorary freedom to date was Isaac Butt in 1876. Some of other recipients have included Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II, U2 and Mother Teresa.
