Call over access to services for disabled

Ireland lags well behind the rest of the EU and the US when it comes to providing accessible public services for people with disabilities, a national conference on disabilities has been told.

The conference, which was organised by the National Disability Authority, heard that while some work had been done on improving access to both buildings and services for people with disabilities, a lot more needed to be done.

Speaking at the conference in Tullamore, Co Offaly, the NDA's accessibility team manager, Sean Murphy, said that improvement in the delivery of all public services for people with disabilities was now a priority.

‘We've gone well beyond just putting in a wheelchair ramp and a disabled toilet. There are many forms of disability, not just physical, and all need to be planned for,’ Mr Murphy said.
