The Vatican has criticised modern feminism, saying its fight for power and gender equality is undermining the traditional concept of family.
It has also criticised feminism for creating a climate where gay marriages are seen as acceptable.
In a 37-page document published today, the Vatican said women should be respected and have equal rights in the workplace, but that differences between the sexes must be recognised and exalted.
The document, which is a letter in the form of a booklet to bishops, was prepared by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the head of the Vatican department in charge of safeguarding and interpreting doctrine.
