Approximately 324,000 people in Ireland have some degree of disability, according to a report commissioned by Comhairle which provides advice and information on social services.

The report recommends that Comhairle should have a lead role in developing a paid and professional Advocacy Service to ensure the needs of people with disabilities are met.

The report compiled by Goodbody Economic Consultants found that advocacy services - which provide empowerment, autonomy, inclusion and protect the rights of citizens - are underdeveloped in Ireland.

The report, which was launched by the Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Coughlan today, was commissioned in preparation for the expected new disabilities legislation.
