A mayor in southwest France has carried out the country's first gay marriage, despite a warning that he could face legal action.
Noel Mamere said he carried out the civil marriage ceremony of two men in the town of Begles, a suburb of Bordeaux, because he wanted to fight all forms of discrimination, including homophobia.
The French government said it was moving to punish the mayor.
French law allows civil unions for homosexual couples but denies them full tax and inheritance rights.
