Spain's Crown Prince Felipe and former journalist Letizia Ortiz have exchanged marriage vows at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral before some 1,600 guests at the biggest gathering of royalty in two decades.

Over a million people thronged on the streets of Madrid to celebrate Spain's first royal wedding in almost a century.

There was tight security throughout the city, following the rail bombings of 11 March there.

Air space over Madrid was  closed off for the event.

Among the guests who attended the wedding were Irish President Mary McAleese, Britain's Prince Charles and the former South African president, Nelson Mandela.
