Funeral for Irish soldier killed in Liberia

The funeral has taken place in Dublin of the army ranger who was killed in a road accident last Thursday in Liberia, West Africa.

Sergeant Derek Mooney, 33, from Blackrock had just completed two years of study at UCD, and had been in Liberia only a week when the Landrover he was driving went off the road.

The Church of St John the Baptist in Blackrock was crowded for his funeral Mass. He was described as a man who loved soldiering and was an unflappable, loyal friend.

After Mass, Mr Mooney's coffin was placed on a gun carriage and brought to Shanganagh Cemetery.
