The International Criminal Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia in the Hague this afternoon sentenced former Republika Srbska president Biljana Plavsic to 11 years for crimes against humanity.
Ms Plavsic, who is 72, had pleaded guilty to crimes committed during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia.
Known as the Iron Lady, she had been accused of playing a leading role in the campaign of persecution against Croats and Muslims in Bosnia that killed thousands and left thousands more homeless.
She had served as a deputy to Radovan Karadzic.
The prosecution had sought a sentence of up to 25 years.
Mangan gives evidence
Earlier, the chief of staff of the Defence Forces, Lt-Gen Colm Mangan, gave evidence at the trial there of the former Yugoslav leader, Slobodan Milosevic.
General Mangan was the leader of an EU monitoring mission in Dubrovnik in 1991 when it came under intense shelling.
He told the Tribunal the attack by Yugoslav forces involved the indiscriminate targeting of civilian areas with no military value.
He said he witnessed attacks on hotels, marinas and residential areas.
