The Government of India has awarded SDLP MP and MEP, John Hume, the Gandhi peace prize. He was given the prize for what was described as his outstanding work in heralding a new era of justice, peace and reconciliation in Ireland.
Mr Hume said he was deeply honoured to receive the award, as Mahatma Gandhi was a person he greatly admired.
