John Hume has announced today that he is giving his £300,000 Nobel prize to charity. Along with the prize itself, John Hume and David Trimble got some £300,000 each. Today the SDLP leader said he is to set up the Hume Charitable Trust with over £250,000.
The earnings from this money will benefit the Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army, charities with roots in each community. The balance will go to the Omagh Fund and the Victims memorial Trust.
Today Mr Hume paid tribute to the work of these charities and said he hoped his trust would continue to attract funds.
