Sri Lanka's President Kumaratunga has issued a nationwide appeal for calm, in the wake of an assassination attempt by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber. 21 people were killed and the President was wounded in the attack. In a radio broadcast from hospital, the President said that there should be no reprisals against the minority Tamil community.
