On 15 April 2013, RTÉ launched a new range of services for under-sevens, including a digital radio station, television channel and mobile app. RTÉjr is a non-commercial cross-platform channel that broadcasts every day for 12 hours from 7am.
Conor McNally reports from the launch of RTÉjr. Head of Children's Content Sheila de Courcy says RTÉ’s mission is to explore the way Irish children are growing up. Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald says RTÉjr shows the changing nature of childhood.
The channel will have 14 brand new shows, including ‘Tell Me a Story’. But running costs are low: Director General Noel Curran says it is all being done out of existing resources.
