The local women were another attraction, though the unwary soldier could find himself in some trouble for straying out of bounds.
Jack King recalls how himself and a friend went off with two local girls. The two soldiers were set upon by a gang and Jack had a ring his mother gave him, money and books stolen.
To add to their ignominy Jack and his friend were then bundled into a net by mounted soldiers from their own battalion because they had gone out of bounds.
