A sailing cooperative in Dún Laoghaire looks to make the sport more accessible.
Formed in 1984 the Sailing In Dublin Club is based in a shipping container at the Coal Harbour. The club is run as a co-operative with none of the members owning a boat.
A great example of making sailing a sport for all.
People can join as a guest, or become a member if they like what is on offer, and says Dinghy Officer Jo Twomey.
They get to sail without owning their own boat.
The club started off with a few dinghies, but has grown since then and as Damien Byrne explains, the club has acquired different types of boats.
We've expanded the fleet.
Being able to sail without owning a boat is the real attraction of the club. Members share maintenance tasks and have regular opportunities to upskill, says Bronagh O’Leary who is a Club Officer,
If there is maintenance to be done, everybody chips in.
