Wine Week at the Mansion House in Dublin hopes to boost the sale and consumption of wine in Ireland.
Ireland's first ever international wine fair 'Wine Week’ opens in the Mansion House, Dublin. The event is sponsored by the Wine Promotion Board with the aim of increasing sales of wine in Ireland.
The wine fair is opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alderman Patrick Belton. Also attending is the Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Zepos.
In an effort to encourage Irish people to drink more wine, over 40 importers are exhibiting wines from France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and America.
We are the lowest consumers in Europe taking just three litres per person a year.
This is compared to the 100 litres in France and 7 litres a head in the United Kingdom. It is estimated that only 10% of the Irish population ever drink wine.
The wine fair is not a free sampling session.
For the £1.50 entrance fee visitors to the wine fair get a glass and ten vouchers. Each voucher can be exchanged for a sampling measure of wine.
A good wine could cost you three vouchers for the one taste.
The wine fair runs from 10 – 14 October 1978 and is open from noon to 10 pm.
