Great excitement as supporters welcome first time FAI Cup winners Limerick Football Club home.
Limerick FC made history on 21 April 1971, winning the FAI Cup for the very first time. It took another trip to Dalymount Park for a replay for Limerick to beat Drogheda United.
Where the cup final had finished scoreless there was no doubt in the replay with Limerick managed by Ewan Fenton beating Drogheda United 3-0. All three goals came in the second half of the game, the first from Davy Barrett was followed by two more scored by Hughie Hamilton.
On their return home the Limerick team were greeted by jubilant supporters who wanted to welcome home the new FAI Cup winners.
