On International Women's Day, women interned at Richmond Barracks in 1916 are remembered on a quilt.

Seventy seven women who were held at Richmond Barracks after the Easter Rising in 1916 are commemorated in a specially created quilt.

The quilt was created by seventy seven women contemporary activists, each of whom was assigned a panel to research. Project co-ordinator Marja Almqvist says the process gave them the opportunity to respond to those stories.

Historian Mary McAuliffe explains that the featured individuals who were active in the Easter Rising were mostly ordinary working class women and this meant that

Their histories are difficult to find.

Éadoain Ní Chléirigh of Richmond Barracks says that the quilt project has provided participants with a different way to engage with the past.

It has lifted the history off the pages.

The quilt will be exhibited in the restored Richmond Barracks when it opens on 2 May 2016.
