Electricians travel at their own expense to Cape Clear to wire houses on the island for electricity.

A unique project sees electricians volunteer their services to bring electricity to the homes of 200 residents on Cape Clear (Oileán Chléire).

The electricians travelled for free by boat from Baltimore on the mainland to Cape Clear and were accommodated at no cost by the island people. The equipment required for wiring up the houses was also provided free of charge by an electrical firm in Cork city.

The project began when Sceim na gCearcumman in Cork sought the assistance of electricians to help wire the island homes. Ninety electricians volunteered and forty were selected to carry out the work.

In the new year, the island will have its own electricity generating station, which will be maintained by the local co-op.

It is hoped that the goodwill from this project will carry on to other initiatives for Cape Clear in the future.
